Exploring Urban Identities in De-industrialized Cities
at the
New Bedford Art Museum

Theme: The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Department of Art History, is inviting artists to submit photographic works in response to the theme: the changing urban identities of post-industrial mid-size American cities. The works should specifically explore the past, present and future of “Gateway” cities in Massachusetts such as New Bedford, Fall River, Brockton, Fitchburg, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Pittsfield, Springfield, and Worcester.

The exhibit is broadly described as exploring the past, present and future of Gateway Cities and can include themes focused on the cultural, economic, architectural, social and civic life of the city. Works done in all photographic media are encouraged.

Jurors: The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Pamela Karimi and Dr. Thomas Stubblefield of Art History Dept., University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Patricia Daughton, Special Events and Cultural Programming Consultant, and Laura Ryan, graduate student in photography.

Entry Procedure: Artists are asked to submit up to three images. Only digital submissions will be accepted. All digital files must be JPEG Image width not to exceed 1500 pixels on the longest side and at least 1024 pixels. Files should be titled as LastName_FirstName_Number_Title.  A brief artist statement and biography should accompany the work.

Acceptance Guidelines:

  1. The complete guidelines for sizes and all dates regarding the installation, reception and additional programming will be distributed to the artists whose works are selected.
  2. The selected work must be sent or dropped off at the gallery ready for installation. All shipping and handling of the work is the responsibility of the artist.
  3. Artists will be expected to provide high resolution images of the work for inclusion in the catalogue, advertising, publication, and other promotional materials.
