Faculty Awards

Dr. Memory Holloway recieved fellowship and grants awards from Radcliffe College, Harvard University and Inside-Out Training, Philadelphia. For teaching in US Prisons.

Dr. Pamela Karimi & Dr. Thomas Stubblefiled received the 2012 UMASS President’s Creative Economy Initiatives Fund

Dr. Hallie Meredith received Research funding awarded from the University of Colorado, Boulder Program for Writing and Rhetoric.

2012 – Museum of Modern Art – MOMA, New York

Through regular Field trips, the Art History Department provides an opportunity to study art first hand in museums and major centers of art and art history in the vicinity of the UMass Dartmouth campus. Field trips to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) are regularly scheduled by the art history faculty. Additionally, the Art history Club frequently organizes trips to other local historical sites, museums, and galleries.

To celebrate Halloween, the Art History club will be sponsoring a “Grotesque and Film” event which will feature presentations by: James Negri, Katie Carlotto, Virginia Luongo and Alex Moore. These brave individuals have scoured their film collection to find the most disturbing films from the history of cinema. But wait, it gets even better… the presenters will walk us through these creepy clips while dressed in costume! Costumes for audience members are also encouraged.

Theme: The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Department of Art History, is inviting artists to submit photographic works in response to the theme: the changing urban identities of post-industrial mid-size American cities. The works should specifically explore the past, present and future of “Gateway” cities in Massachusetts such as New Bedford, Fall River, Brockton, Fitchburg, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Pittsfield, Springfield, and Worcester.

The exhibit is broadly described as exploring the past, present and future of Gateway Cities and can include themes focused on the cultural, economic, architectural, social and civic life of the city. Works done in all photographic media are encouraged.

Jurors: The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Pamela Karimi and Dr. Thomas Stubblefield of Art History Dept., University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Patricia Daughton, Special Events and Cultural Programming Consultant, and Laura Ryan, graduate student in photography.

Entry Procedure: Artists are asked to submit up to three images. Only digital submissions will be accepted. All digital files must be JPEG Image width not to exceed 1500 pixels on the longest side and at least 1024 pixels. Files should be titled as LastName_FirstName_Number_Title.  A brief artist statement and biography should accompany the work.

Acceptance Guidelines:

  1. The complete guidelines for sizes and all dates regarding the installation, reception and additional programming will be distributed to the artists whose works are selected.
  2. The selected work must be sent or dropped off at the gallery ready for installation. All shipping and handling of the work is the responsibility of the artist.
  3. Artists will be expected to provide high resolution images of the work for inclusion in the catalogue, advertising, publication, and other promotional materials.

2012 Art History Senior Seminar Exhibition

As part of the Senior Seminar art history students develop exhibition and catalog entitled, UMassD the Original Intent Behind the Concrete Jungle featuring Paul Rodulph’s original architectural drawings.  The exhibition will explore the ongoing debate surrounding the campus design, by renowned architect, Paul Rudolph.  The exhibition will be held in the CVPA Design Gallery Room 154 from May 1 – May 6, 2012.

2011 – Art History Provost Speaker Series

With an award from the Provost Office, the Art History Department coordinated a spring speaker series on the Business of Art: Fifteen Minutes of Fame & Decades of Success. Art History Department and MFA Program sponsored a series of nine speakers to discuss strategies and techniques to navigate a career in the arts. Business of Art Brochure.
